New Post

Dear Residents,

If someone were to ask you what’s the one distinct architectural element of Red House, what would you say?

We’re very confident 90% of you thought of the arches in the indoor hall. We’ve in fact had people tell us that the arches make them feel like they’ve entered a church!

But what is it about arches that make them so special? Is it the fact that they defy gravity? Or that they can bear immense weight, span vast distances, and still stand ever erect? Or that they appear across every civilisation’s architecture: from Roman aqueducts to Mughal gateways to cathedral naves?

We’re finally conducting The Workshop we've been requested to design and conduct by so many across these past three years — on a feature of architecture which may perhaps characterise the entirety of the Red House movement. This Sunday, come build with us, brick by brick, arches towards heaven.

No matter your experience or inexperience in architecture though, or manual labour, or physics - or poetry, learn from us how an 'arch' is even possible, its various wonderful varieties across history — and not only this, but BUILD YOUR VERY OWN ARCH and be able to take it back home with you. If you know anything about Red House, you know we will make it a reality.

All materials will be provided, of course.

Your instructor will be the director of Red House, Arjun Shivaji Jain - graduate in Art and Science from Central Saint Martins of the University of the Arts in London, and in Nuclear Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee. Also, former international Young Companions' Representative of John Ruskin's Guild of St George (est. 1871) and recently published as one of 108 representative Contemporary Artists of India. — More than anything else though, Arjun has experience of having constructed with his own hands eleven Gothic arches and a grand Roman arch.
