“I write only because
There is a voice within me
That will not be still”
-Sylvia Plath

Dear Residents,

This Sunday, on what would have been Sylvia Plath's 92nd birthday, we at Red House are honoured to celebrate her legacy with “Poppies in October.”

Sylvia’s remarkable talent often gets overshadowed by her personal struggles, yet she truly knew how to “live, love, and say it well in good sentences.” To illuminate her brilliance, we invite you to join us for an evocative reading led by the magnificent Delhi poetess and Red House resident, Kanika Aurora. She will delve into some of Sylvia’s most intense and probing poems, alongside entries from her journals and excerpts from The Bell Jar.

The performance aims to explore the complexities of Sylvia's life—her joy and despair, like two electric currents, intertwined until the tragic end. As she once wrote:

“I didn’t want any flowers, I only wanted to lie with my hands turned up and be utterly empty. How free it is, you have no idea how free. All this while, listening to the old brag of her heart, 'I am, I am, I am.'”
